e-Governance of 52,000 Panchayats begins to meet August Deadline

Print PDF
The Uttar Pradesh state government has initiated the computerisation of the 52,000 gram panchayats spread across the state. The project is expected to be completed by August 2010, before the next panchayat elections likely to be held in September 2010.

The plan aims to extend the National e-Governance Plan (NEGP) to the grassroots in the state. Work has already started and over 7,000 panchayats have been covered. Panchayats are an important tool for development in rural areas, it is important that there be transparency in their functioning. Hence, computerisation of the gram panchayats is being undertaken.

The National Informatics Centre (NIC) is also developing the e-Panchayat software, which will serve as a tool for providing support services to welfare schemes. Besides allowing the downloading of birth and death registration forms, the website will also offer other details like details of House Tax revenue collected in each district.
